Emmet and Warren Jones originally settled the community of Jonestown in the 1930s. With humble and rural beginnings, the brothers had a vision of a perfect lakeside retirement community. Around 1940, Warren built the first commercial structure in what is now Jonestown. When Mansfield Dam was increased in height and Lake Travis was filled, the development of Jonestown as a lake resort became possible.
Jonestown offers several recreational highlights of all water sports throughout the year including boating, water skiing, sailing, scuba diving, wake boarding and fishing. Jones Brothers Park features a public, 14-acre lakeshore offering cooking areas, recreational sports, swimming, a pavilion for local events and a fantastic children’s playscape. Additionally, Lake Travis has been rated the cleanest reservoir in Texas by the state’s Water Commission. The lake offers 270 miles of shoreline with fish coves, deep waters of up to 190 feet and multiple launching ramps. Some annual events include a community-wide Easter Service, Jonestown Area Chamber of Commerce Gala and Banquet, and the State of Texas Chili Cook-off.
As the “Gateway to Hill Country,” Jonestown sits in the backyard of a beautiful landscape for residents to enjoy. Texas Hill Country is truly like another state, presenting winding roads and rivers, wildflowers, ghost towns and towns with funny names. This beautiful area welcomes five million visitors annually for its abundant wildlife such as white-tailed deer, mockingbirds and armadillos and open fields of colorful flowers.
